Hi there … How u doing ?

My self Dr.Deb .
Your friendly neighborhood dentist & the reclusive editor at Dentalorg.Com

Umm … As it goes am still a student. Doing my MDS getting my daily dose of kicks and bumps from the college. Today specially was very tough … Or you can say epic with epic proportion of good old college dose … Phew !!!

I started my journey in dentistry in the year 2004. Fresh out of 12th and raring to make a place in this world. All pumped up and ready to fight for my turf in this big world.

When you are eighteen, just out of school, fresh in to a professional college … there are a millions of hopes and dreams in heart.

Simply put, most of us are just shielded from all the hard ships of life by our parents till now. And in dental college we are finally exposed to many aspects of life that shape us emotionally.

BDS it self was a roller coaster ride. It starts slowly. And starts getting faster n faster. We make friends, have our share of fights, some fall in love, gather in canteen after college. Then there are exams, clinical quotas, assignments … list is endless.

Of many such instances, I can confess few things that makes my lips smile on thinking

Faking signatures on records & oral path records. He he … I know it’s not a correct thing to do , but all of us have done it at some point. And I can still remember the chill I felt on my back when I was showing my OP record to mam and I had forged 5 signs. Perfect foolishness. But escaped. Lol … Not a correct thing but some how it has become a fond memory.

Most common nostalgic moments for any BDS student :

•Finishing anatomy slides and then oral path slides.

•Making drugs in mortar & pestle

•Running around to finish the preclinical quotas, teeth setting … Phew and that too in summer.

•Final year hopping to all departments to complete the work in all the 7 departments.

•Fighting with friends for instruments,cases.

•Taking part in college annual functions, sports, dance, fashion show & my personal favorite live music shows.

And so many more moments. Moments that seemed trivial that time but as time passes they become memories.

Frankly speaking days of BDS are fast and create lot of happy memories. All of us pick some hobbies during that time. I took to guitar and web designing.

The honeymoon gets disturbed usually in the last phase of internship. That’s the time when we see our friends who are in the engineering stream getting campus placements with a starting package of 30 K. And that’s the time many of us are working in a seniors clinic for a sum of 1000 bucks. And that’s the time we start getting tension for our future. That sense of urgency comes. What’s next ? How many more years before a stable job.

I think that’s the time, around when many of us start saying ” BDS KARKE PHANS GAYA ” Every thing just starts looking negative.

But fact is every problem has a solution. If your problem is “What after BDS” ?Then you can see this article WHAT AFTER BDS ?

Any ways there is no reason to get disheartened. Talk with people you are close to. After discussions with parents some solution will come out . For example I decided to prepare for MDS exams , few of my other friends joined pharm companies, some started preparing for civil service exams. Luckily for me and my set of friends things fell in place. I got through MDS exams. Two of my friends have moved ahead in the company management. The one who prepared for state civil service got through exams and now is class I income tax officer.

So things always work out for career in some way. As for me I started my MDS session and believe me it’s not even half fun as BDS days.

Thing to understand here is that … In all the years of studying dentistry BDS & MDS we should not start thinking dentistry as life itself. Life is about so much more. It’s a journey with so much more to do.

Been a journey from BDS to MDS. And am thankful to God for all the opportunities & experience. Now am in the final year of my MDS … Fighting through case quotas, seminars , big heart break , pain , making music . And life rolls on.

I know it’s a random abstract piece of article. And here am not telling you how you should prepare for exams or how you should study. Every body has their own way. I just want to say , if you consider life as a whole , then BDS / MDS is just a small part of it. Explore the life in all aspects. Don’t worry too much about exams, MDS, dental career etc . Just move with the flow. Fill your heart with all the love and respect for every one and every body in your life . Thank god for all you have and also for all that you are going to have. Say thanks for the special people who have given you love and time, even if they are not in your life anymore. Acceptance, love, understanding will bring peace. And then you can set forth for the journey of life and god bless all.

I guess I should get back to my books … Mind moves to some one special who has gone far … Heart pains … But have things to do …

And all my dental friends & students, please stop worrying too much about dentistry, MDS, exams, NEET… There’s lot more to life. Just believe that God will shower with all the happiness.

Well it’s time for me to get back to my study desk. Back to reading Carranza :/

And my dear friends ” Hakuna Matata” …

From PMT to PG, a little boy transforms, from a novice, who runs to mom and daddy for every worry of his; to a person, to whom people run for their worries!

It’s a big story. If tried to tell in short, then we will have to start from the internship period. Because before internship there is nothing that big we are exposed to. Till then our lives are up to canteen and classes only. Once internship strikes, you come to know that what you are going to face next. You are going to be on your own, going to be the most treasured graduate in this country!

“Power brings responsibility along with it” used to tell the uncle of Spiderman! Same happens in internship. We are working like a doctor for the first time, getting handsome stipend; on our own, to an extent. After the on call duties in wards, you return in the room and think “Ok! Now what next? Where do I want to see myself some five or ten years from now?”

I used to idolize my teachers; I wanted to be like them. Like the best one among them! For that, here came a need of post graduation. May be you are thinking that I was bit late in thinking about it, but it’s a story of average people in the undergrad amongst whom I found myself.

There come MCQ books, along with long forgotten anatomy and microbiology too. But… how to start? What to read and what not? My few weeks went in thinking and planning new ways to study until I realized that “Oh boy! You need help!” Go to those successful, those preparing, seniors. Among them many were those with whom I didn’t have a good rapport or had a sour relationship. Somewhat hesitant, I thought not to approach them, but the big question of life was meandering in front of me “a PG seat!”

I swallowed my false self pride in front of seniors and approached them and my goodness! They were so kind in forgetting all bad blood and being eager in helping their loving junior of a time! Life taught me a lesson again, like Spiderman’s uncle, that life is too small and we are smaller even; there are few people whom we know in our lives among millions in this world and there was no use in fighting with hand full of human beings we will ever be able to know in this big world in our small life span!

Any way, my preparation started and went on smoothly. I stopped news paper, forgot who the new chart-busting singer is and who married whom. I went through all this for months. At last the prayers of my family, my well-wishers, melted the heart of God! He blessed me with a decent rank in AIPG 2006!

Life changed altogether! People started to take note of me; my dad mom could say that they have sons who can realise their dreams!

But the biggest change came from within, in me! I started to get back my confidence that I was also worth and I could also have a place of my own in this fast-forward world!

During my preparation days, I used to think it this way: that we all graduates were people corked inside a big bottle! And there was one mouth of the bottle to come out and see the world, which was fitted with a cap. All of us plan and prepare to push open that cap of the bottle, all the months until first Sunday of January comes! On that fateful day we all jump leaps and bounds, we push open the cap!! But there are so many people locked inside the bottle that not all can escape the imprisonment in that bottle….. Some escape, being blessed, some have to toil again. More than that they have to wait for full one more year…

With all its teachings through the years, life teaches us how to wait for that great Sunday of January and how to jump so precisely to uncap that bottle and end up with freedom! To lead the next part of it – Life!

Hospital administration is the management of the hospital as a business. The administration is made up of medical and health services managers (sometimes called health care executives and health care administrators) and assistant administrators. Administrations range in size and the duties of the administrator depends on the size of the administration.

In the present scenario it is one of the most searched career option by all the dental graduates particularly by BDS & Interns . MDS being very tough & costly to get through , students are looking for alternatives that can shape up their career .

Number of students opting for MBA in hospital management after BDS is increasing constantly . There are many success stories right now , where BDS graduates are earning handsomely without being MDS or investing heavily in clinic .

So read on this article to have some basic idea about the course .

Responsibilities of a Hospital Administrator

One of the most important assets of any community is a hospital. A hospital is a resource for anyone needing emergency medical attention or care beyond what a physician’s office can provide. A hospital is staffed by a multitude of employees, and in such a busy, complex environment, there must be someone who can organize and coordinate all of the people and services that are required. This role is fulfilled by a hospital administrator, the person who oversees everything that goes on in a hospital.

Staff Hiring

The hospital administrator is typically the person who oversees the hiring of the staff. From the janitor who sweeps the halls to the nurses who tend to patients to the supervisors who oversee the nurses, it is the hospital administrator who is ultimately responsible for employing qualified people.

Coordination of Business Functions

Most hospitals have a variety of business and support functions, and the hospital administrator coordinates and oversees these functions. In a small hospital, the administrator may handle these tasks directly. In a larger hospital, assistants and managers may be appointed to handle various business and support functions, but the hospital administrator will still oversee their work.

Every hospital has its own set of policies that govern employees, procedures and services offered to patients. A hospital administrator may be required to develop policies and procedures and ensure that they are followed, or he may implement policies created by a governing board or body. Short-range and long-range plans for a hospital’s development and overall growth are also usually handled, or at least supervised, by a hospital administrator.

Managing Patient Records A large part of the hospital administrator’s job concerns managing patient records. The administrator must make sure that medical histories, current health information, and billing, insurance and legal documents are all being handled appropriately. Keeping all of this information organized and up to date is an essential role that a hospital administrator must fill.

Business Aspects

Hospitals are now run like small- or medium-sized businesses and involve all conventional business operations, practices and procedures. A hospital administrator has to manage the business side of the hospital to ensure smooth running of the hospital on all fronts.

The business aspects encompass management of human resources and personnel, establishing policies and procedures, maintaining of computer systems and databases, allocation of budgets, tracking accounts and finance, and other organizational systems. He or she coordinates with professionals, staff members and other employees and assigns their duties and tasks.

Address Doctors’ Needs

A hospital administrator has to interact, engage and coordinate with doctors, physicians, surgeons, nurses, health care technicians, other medical staff members and health care professionals involved with the primary care, treatment and rehabilitation of patients.

A hospital administrator has to draw up schedules for resident doctors and allied medical staff, address their specific needs and ensure that they are able to perform their primary duties of looking after patients, professionally and ethically. A hospital administrator also coordinates with external specialists and consultants in case of emergencies and specialized operations.

Patients’ Medical Care and Well-Being

The care and treatment of patients in the hospital is a major responsibility of the hospital administrator. He or she has to ensure the availability and deliverability of quality facilities and amenities for all patients. The administrator has to motivate the medical teams and allied staff members to perform their roles, tasks and functions to the best of their abilities to make the patients feel comfortable at all times. He or she takes rounds of all rooms and centers where patients are housed or recuperating and, if necessary, makes quick, informed decisions to alleviate or improve patient care.

Dealing with External Vendors

A hospital administrator has to liaise with vendors, contractors, insurance firms, suppliers and other partners on a regular basis. Keeping the hospital stocked with drugs, medicines, food items, hospital equipment, systems, allied hospital gadgets and machinery is a priority item. This is a critical responsibility so as to ensure that the primary and tertiary care of patients and the specialized needs of doctors and surgeons are not compromised. The administrator has to have sound negotiation skills to draw up the right contracts, follow-up on orders and maximize purchasing power with vendors and suppliers.

Overseer

Hospital administrators must oversee daily hospital operations by supervising other managers and managing budgets and financial operations.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION

All graduates from any stream are eligible for this course . BDS graduates are also Eligible for it . Its still an untapped area of jobs & many BDS & MBBS graduates are gradually trying for it .

This is a specialized courses and all those interested in working in the fast emerging sector can pursue a course in healthcare management. However, it varies from institution to institution. Some institutions offer course only to doctors while others to graduates in science and some others are open to students from all streams.

1.What is hospital and healthcare management?

ANSWER : MBA is a management course but an MBA in Hospital Management or Administration is a specialized course to manage hospitals and other industries that cater to healthcare. A general MBA targets subjects that deal with general management of the organization but a specialized course like an MBA in healthcare management teaches its students courses that can be utilized in the healthcare industry. For instance if you study law in an MBA course you will be taught various aspects of the subject but at an MBA in Healthcare Management you will learn about the laws that can be utilized in healthcare industry.

2.What are the career prospects after pursuing a course in healthcare and hospital management?

ANSWER : The career prospects in this sector our very bright as it is an emerging field in India. People want better hospitals and as our country progresses so will the need for better healthcare institutions. Besides hospitals people can also find jobs in healthcare and medical tourism, resorts, healthcare BPOs, biotechnology firms, biochemistry firms and insurance sector. Companies like Accenture, Infosys, ICICI, HDFC etc are recruiting people who have a specialization in healthcare management.

3.What is the present healthcare industry scenario?

ANSWER : Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industry. According to a recent published report by the Mckinsey Global Institute, ‘The Bird of Gold’: the rise of India’s Consumer Markets, spending on healthcare will witness the highest growth rate among all spending categories over the next two decades. Healthcare grew from 4 per cent of average household income to 7 per cent in 2005, and is expected to grow to 13 per cent by 2025.

4.What is its scope in India and in other countries?

ANSWER : In developed countries where the ratio of the doctor to the patient is 1:1000 in India it is still 1:10,000. The hospital or healthcare industry has a huge scope and need for growth. Doctors are a precious commodity in India and it is better to let them focus on patients than to be concerned about the management of the hospitals.
Even government hospitals have now-a-days started to employ people to look after the management of the institutions. In Gujarat the government has taken initiative to train doctors in management.

5.Who should join this course?

ANSWER : This is a specialized courses and all those interested in working in the fast emerging sector can pursue a course in healthcare management. However, it varies from institution to institution. Some institutions offer course only to doctors while others to graduates in science and some others are open to students from all streams.

6.Which are the best colleges in India to pursue this course?

ANSWER : At present there are many colleges in India that offer a course in Hospital and healthcare management. To name a few I would say the course is available at IIMA, ISB, IIMR, Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration, Symbiosis, CREMA, Institute of Public Health and Hygeine, Administrative Staff College of India.

In this part we will be discussing some major DO’s & DON’Ts of MDS PG Entrance Exams

Group Study? YOUR CHOICE

If you had earlier studied in groups during your undergraduate days – follow it.

If you had studied alone during your undergraduate days – follow it

If you used to read in Library during your undergraduate days – follow it

If you used to read in your room during your undergraduate days – follow it

If you used to read watching TV during your undergraduate days – follow it

Group Discussion? - YES

A discussion of 2 hours a day will be enough initially. ( When you allot more than 2 hours the discussion will drift to extra curricular topics)

In the last month, you can discuss upto 3 to 4 hours a day

Choose a subject and then a topic and one person discuss it each day

If the same group also works out MCQs, don’t do both in the same time

First Discuss and then go to MCQs

Should I go to Cities and study in University Library? - No Need

Assumed Advantages by Reading in Cities

Some people talk of a “trend” – There is nothing like that.

In today’s era of Communication, there is no advantage in city life. All the notifications, current trends can be had from the internet.

I Personally feel that this present trend is the same one which was 7 to 8 years ago for Entrance Exams after XII Standard – you will get medical and engineering seat only if you study in Cities – Now we know for sure that, that idea was absurd

Disadvantages in Cities

Lodging – minimum Rs 500 per month

Food – minimum Rs 1300 per month

Other expenses – Rs 400 per month

Water – Hope you are aware of the Water Scarcity in Cities.

Travel & Phoning home – Even if you visit your home once a month – Rs 1000

Totally you spend Rs 3000 per month ie Nearly 40,000 per year for no obvious benefit

Note - Petrol Charges not included

Coaching Programs - YES

There are a lot of coaching programs and you can enroll in any one of them. And after a long toil at this circuit what I could conclude was that as far as the papers ( ie notes / study materials/question papers / high yield points etc ) are concerned, in majority of cases, it is almost the same as SARP/ PARAS / Bhatia/ Salgunan / PG Plus/ Dharmendra Sharma Crash Course/ Mudit Khanna / Tapas-Arun Yadav/ Various Pretests etc

The notes of the coaching program and the MCQ books are nearly equa but when you attend the “CLASSROOM” COACHING, it will be beneficial. In fact the only thing that seems as an advantage is the classroom coaching.

So if you want any advantage, please don’t look at the previous years “papers” – notes/test explanations – you are going to get those details from the books you normally refer.

It is the class room coaching / lectures that you are spending your/your parents’ hard earned Rs 20000 or 30000 in any coaching class

So if you are joining make sure that you will be attending all the classes or you can very well read with the standard books.

In South India, Kottayam is a good choice

What? How? What not to do Pre, Per and Post Exam

Pre Exam – (Before the day of exam)

o Before 1 month

o During the last month

o During the last week

o During the last day

Per Exam – (On the Exam day)

o Before you enter the hall

o In the hall

Post Exam – (After the Exam day)

As you go through the following paragraph, you may come across certain facts which are Extra Academic and may appear insignificant or “childish” to you and you may like to skip those. I feel that advices regarding the MCQs are available freely every where and it is these “small things” that are taken for granted. Nevertheless, they are important and they are given here because I know at least one person who suffered because he/she didn’t do one of those “trivial” things.

What? How? What not to do 1 month before the exam

Plan your time

Read Daily. But if you are working and have a tight routine You can read more one day and less another day, but don’t skip a day

Divide your time available for that day into 3 parts

o Read the Text books first

o Then read the notes

o And work out MCQs

These three are to be done daily and it is better if different subjects are done for each

What not to be done : Don’t allow a day to pass without reading at least one hour

Planning your time

Keep the last 1 month for revision

And you should spend a Minimum 20 hours a week, and If you can spend more than that it is well and good

Calculate how much time in hours you now have at your disposal. You will be surprised to see that you have lots and lots of time, but when you start to allot it to your subjects that is not enough!!

What? How? What not to do during the last month before the exam

If the exam centre is a different place, BOOK Your Tickets for your travel. Remember that you are not the only person appearing for this exam

Start Revision

o Pharmac and Biochem should be revised 2 times and it is better if you start them first

o And topics like Embryology and Nerve Supply in Anatomy, Enzymes and Metabolism in Biochem, General Pharmacology, Culture Media in Micro, Growth and Development in Paediatrics, Fetal Skull and Diameters of Pelvis in OG, Values in SPM are to be studied again and again

o The list given is just to give you an idea about is not exhaustive. In short the topics that “you” easily forget are to be read more than once in the last month

What not to be done : Don’t Read any new topics

And I think that you are not a kid for us to advice you to Skip 3Cs Cricket, Cinema and Celebrations during this last month

What ?, How ?, What not to do during the last week Before the exam

Extra Academic

Decide where you are going to stay. Get those facts right now before one week.

Check whether you have got your hall ticket. If not communicate to the concerned authorities. Read the details given in the hall ticket and the prospectus ONCE AGAIN.

Does the exam need Pen or Pencil. Get 2 (or 3) pens ready. If the exam needs pencil, get 2 pencils, an eraser (which does not leave mark on the paper – check it now – not on the answer sheet) and a sharpener.

Pack these and the hall ticket and anything you may need and (if you have a special dress for exams, as most people have – pack that too) now itself. Keep your journey (to and fro) ticket along with these.

To search for all these just 1 hour before the start of the journey is not going to do your confidence any good. Don’t leave these vital things which (may appear insignificant now, but will occupy the whole of your mind , if not properly planned for and) may significantly affect your PERFORMANCE

Academic

Take an old question paper of the exam you are going to attend Lock yourself inside a room. Try to complete the paper in the prescribed time Correct the paper with the Standard Text book and not with the key given in the MCQ book itself. Now concentrate on your MISTAKES. They are more important at this stage. You will now know your “Achilles heel”. Don’t repeat it in the exam.

Don’t care about the answers you got right. You will get it right again in your exam !!

What not to be done : Don’t waste your time to topics like “the question will be tough”, “the question will be easy!, “the question is out !!”, “he/she is not here – gone to get the question paper!!!”

Listen to only Academic discussions…… If you are preparing with a group, it is better to get away from the group and become “solitary” in the final week. It may sound odd, but this is a practical problem and I have seen most aspirants getting depressed after hearing such kinds of news.

What ?, How ?, What not to do during the last day Before the exam

Take rest !! If you have traveled a long distance, try and get a good sleep. Revise those facts which you find hard to remember , especially the numeric values, investigations, syndromes, etc. Go to bed early

What not to be done : Don’t try to read more points by forgoing your sleep on this particular day In addition to you recent memory (which you will by reading the whole night) for a good performance you need certain other skills like remote memory, analytical skills, speed, decision making the next say. And to get all these at the zenith is to have a good sleep.

What ?, How ?, What not to do Before you enter the exam hall

Get to the exam centre early at least 1 ½ hours before the start of the exam. Check that your number is displayed in the notice board. Some times 2 schools / colleges with identical names (or a main school and the branch) will be centers and the Auto Rickshaw will take you to the other center – for example, Kendriya Vidyalaya or SBOA - I was once forced to see many a SBOA School in Chennai just before the start of the exam at the eleventh hour. Get out of the campus and wait outside.Check your purses/wallets and make sure that there are no bits of papers (which you might have kept long time back) inside that might create problems with a checking squad

What not to be done : Avoid reading at this time (Easier said than done). Don’t discuss any question. When some one asks you a question and if you can’t answer you may be depressed

What ?, How ?, What not to do Inside the exam hall

First Write your register number looking at it from the Hall ticket (and not from your memory – however good your memory is) and then shade accordingly

Then shade the Question Paper Code, if any. If there any other paper work do it. Read the instructions in the question paper / answer paper. What not to be done : Don’t leave the important details like register number question paper code blank and start with the questions right away. You may commit a mistake (which may be fatal) when you shade these things later “in a hurry”.

Mark the answers in the Q.Paper as you read the questions. When you have completed a batch of 25 (or 50) quesitons transform the answers to the answer sheet

What not to be done : Don’t try to read the entire question paper once again and then mark the answers

What ?, How ?, What not to do Inside the exam hall for Statistics Questions(PSM)

Write the details on the rough sheet and work systematically. If you know an alternate way of working that particular problem try that also and check whether the solutions tally.

What not to be done : Don’t do mental calculations or try from you memory.

What ?, How ?, What not to do during the after the exam

Relax ! Try to recollect the questions. It is better if you do it as a group. Contibute the questions to any internet discussion group

Work out the answers. Try to find out how much you might score. Wait for the result !!!

What not to be done : Don’t try argue over few questions that might be ambiguous
To Conclude

The lines you have read so far are not for advising you

They are to point out to you some facts

Advantage of reading the subjects in the above sequence is repitition of topics and overlapping of MCQs.

Advantage of this method is better understanding of the subject; increased memory retention due to immediate repetition and revision of MCQs.

Disadvantage of this method is that if unexpected entrance dates are announced or if you fail to follow the schedule strictly, there is chance of skipping one or two subjects which may cost you a PG seat.

Second method ( Incremental Study of Every subject )

In this method incremental reading of every subject everyday in a sequence is done instead of reading a single subject at a stretch. This is followed by reading previous years MCQs. This method is advantageous in situations where unexpected dates for entrance exam are announced.

Best method would be to follow the first method for initial preparation and second method for subsequent preparations;

however, program planning and time to be alloted is subject to individual capacities and capabilities.

The interview of many toppers reveal the following principles of preparation

Minimum time required for PG preparation is 6-8 months.

Keep one day/ week as relaxation day or revision day depending upon you time ration.

Don’t read any single subject at a stretch.

Don’t read all the subjects at a stretch from any single individual mcq book.

Read a subject from one book—revise it from other book

During study times, take a break every fifteen to twenty minutes

Read both the clinical and non clinical subjects at same time. Here is an brief idea to read clinical and its concurrent preclinical or relative subject.

Split your time in the ratio of 1:1:1;1

i.e.., one fact oriented clinical subject: 1 technical subject : one relative preclinical subject.

Suppose you are reading for 6 hours a day –tentatively you can draw your time table like this

Fact oriented clinical subject

One and half hour

One and half hour

30 minutes –revision and 60 minutes—new topics

One and half hour

Read from PULSE — oral pathology

Read from DENTEST –Prostho

Read from pulse –dentest related subjects like oral histology or dental materials

Allot 1 hour for theory and 30 minutes for question—reverse this as you progress

The main theme is to be

Be in touch with all the subjects at any time simultaneously covering the previous year mcq .

The answer is definitely –yes –yes -yes

Remember “R” formula

Read——Relax—Retain—revise—reinforce the retention—recall and retrieve

So from the above you see also the importance of relaxation and revision.

So every day make it a point to revise old ones just for 10 minutes before switching to new ones.

While preparing make a note where you are weak –revise it from the same book or any other books or prepare from the theory of that particular topic.

Our brain retains what ever we read . But most of this things are kept in the subconscious mind. By revising it we are reinforce it and can be easily recalled and retrieved from the brain.

Importance of MCQs

* Do atleast 200 mcq per day including one practice test In essence there are 12000 mcq in dentistry which are given interchangeably.

By calculation at this rate you will able to revise 2-3 times .

No. of mcq per day= 200 ( either from clinical, preclinicals or previous year MCQ)

No.of working days in a month= 24-25

No. of mcq completed in a month on average = 6000

Total No.of mcq completed in 4 months on average =24000

No.of revisions on average = 24000/12000=2.

Use previous MCQs to check your progress and preparedness for the exam. Reading the subject again and again will not help much; it is important that the progress be monitored properly by evaluating yourselves by proper self-assessment test.

During self-assessment test:

Don’t proceed beyond the questions you answered wrong by simply knowing the right answer. Purpose is not to learn a particular question, but to find out which topic requires follow-up.we suggest you not to allow more than 45 seconds for each MCQ during practice.

So Don’t worry. Be happy. Have a positive outlook and be confident.

To be continued ….

A warm welcome to all the dental students . Your friendly Dr.Deb is here again .

This time we present you an article by Dr. Gaurav Mathur .

Credentials of Dr.Mathur

AIPGDEE 2012 rank 89

COMEDK 2012 rank 11

MANIPAL 2012 rank 42

JSSU 2012 rank 44

KLE 2012 rank 86

So I hand Over the Article to Dr.Gaurav .

A warm to all docs from me (Dr.Gaurav)

First of all..all the best to mds aspirants…I hope that this helps you all in deciding your preparation strategy…theres no one method to prepare for exams. Take advice from all but follow that which is best for you….ask your seniors about their way of prep, books they followed, exams they gave. But I must say again “Follow what is best according to you”

To start with, remember few points..

Keep your objectives very clear, i.e. your aim for preparation. Many times during preparation, question arises in our mind about usefulness of this preparation, but always remember…

“People who think get only that, what is left behind by people who try”

Hard work always pays off in the end. Keep your mind focused, procure all appropriate study material and do dedicated hard work, its definitely gonna pay off in the end.

Don’t think that competition is so tough, its not possible, its too hard, I cant read so much, etc etc . believe me people, these thoughts come in every mind, but it lies in your own hands entirely how to deal with them and prove them wrong.

Here are some points about my preparation that ill like to share with you all.

1. Time:

I attended my internship for about 6 months…then started prep for this year exams..so had roughly 6 and half mnths in my hand for aipg and 7 and half for MAHE and COMED, time is not less for those who have just started prep but time management is very very important and every second counts..utilize this time to its fullest extent. remember..each second you waste your competitors get ahead of you , SO DONT GIVE THEM THIS CHANCE!!! Don’t think that this is my first attempt, ill do better prep next year. Students do get selected in first attempt, its no rocket science. Just give your maximum to it.

2. Books to be done-

pulse and dentist , neeraj wadhwan..(excellent explanations) , aiims dental papers mudit khanna (for aiims and aipg only)-

previous 5 years papers , amit ashish (again for aiims and aipg only) 5yrs , NBDE papers (very imp for aiims, aipg and mahe) ,

Other entrance papers (can be found in Dental bytes or Dental quest) , dental explore (for bhu papers) , prabhakaran- for perio

3. Theory -

Reading theory part is very important.Mere cramming mcqs wont help you..u must understand question, logic behind it and then solve questions…also “dont read just anything and everything, thats not possible”, read what is RELEVANT…AND FROM GOOD BOOKS . Mark new questions from explanations, synopsis and maintain separate diary for values, scientists, years..etc…theyll be helpful to you for last time revisions and yes I must tell here that my theory part was always strong thoughout my clg life so I didnt face too many difficulties in reading books and my ntes. But yes, if you feel that you are not able to do theory part then its ok, no need to worry, read explanations and synopsis part carefully.

4. Schedule-

Having a proper schedule is very very important. Set your priorities, like which topic and how many topics u have to finish in how much time and try to stick to it, also dont make a very hectic schedule….relax…dont overstress yourself.

5. Coaching classes- I didnt join any classes coz I started very late and so I had to decide things myself, if u think that u wont be able to keep up to your schedule then join classes but dont just rely on them completely, the schedule that they provide may not be suitable for all students .Set your own priorities and work according to them.

6. Sequence-

a. What I did first was read a particular topic (not everything, just brushed through them) from buks and then solved questions

from pulse ,dentest and read their explanations..

b. Once I completed them…I moved on to aipg and aiims papers… Aipg and Aiims papers didnt take too much time( theory and explanation part becomes very handy in these papers and helps solving them).

c. NBDE: Next I started NBDE papers, NBDE are comparatively easy to do but still essential and lengthy, so plan properly. I wasn’t able to complete all, but I completed clinicals. You dont have to do them at a stretch, you can also do them at a rate of 1-2 papers per day right from beginning, since new aspirants have a lot of time u can finish them off within 4-5 months at this rate…aiims and aipg papers have repeats from them definitely.

d. Medical Papers: Right from very first day of my preparation…started Mudit khanna and amit ashish and did few questions per day instead of doing them at a stretch…they took A LOTT OF TIME!!! Problem with these papers is that they are very difficult to retain and very very important…aipg and aiims definitely repeats questions from these. keep separate time for their revision…believe me ppl…doing these papers was HARDEST part of my strategy and they are very volatile so make sure u revise them properly…I didn’t do explanations as there was no time but in any case if u read them its always beneficial..

e. Then I started bytes…there was no time left so cldnt finish all papers..but THE MORE YOU DO THE BETTER!!!! these papers not only helps you to assess your preparation but also builds up your speed and also tells you the important topics and pattern for a particular exam, it also serves as a question bank from where questions can be asked…

f. Prabhakaran: perio has about 300questions..can be done anytime u want, by the time I reached this stage I had already done a lot of questions and many were repeat from prabhakaran, so doing it wasn’t a problem.

g. After aipg, you’ll again get around one month, again set your eyes on next important exam…PREPARE ACCORDING TO IT!! make your schedule according to it…don’t modify your schedule for other exams that comes in between…like my next exam was comed…so i studied according to it. and just revised 1-2 days before other exams…

7. REVISION:

This is the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of your preparation.

Remember, DOING A NUMBER OF BOOKS DOES NOT COUNT. BUT NUMBER OF REVISIONS YOU DO IS MORE IMPORTANT.

Revise as many times as possible, forgetting things is normal but what matters is who forgets LESS. Keep separate time for revision…

8. Time to be given per day :

Now it depends upon time u have in your hand and your speed. When I was attending internship I was able to study 3-4 hrs per day. And afterwards when I really sat for prep I increased it to 7-8 hrs per day and eventually to 12-13hrs. It was too hectic for me but I had to compensate for time lost in clg. Those preparing this year and starting right away, you’ll be having more time so u don’t have to stress so much…relax but don’t relax too much…on avg u need to give abt 8-10 hrs per day for prep.

9. Exams : ALWAYS AIM FOR AIPG, as it includes preparation for all other exams. And attempt as many exams as possible. If u have worked fair enough, you’ll surely land up somewhere. Remember,

“Believe in yourself, if anyone else can do it, you’re no less..keep faith..”

I hope it helps you in your preparation…if there’s anything I can help you with regarding preparation. do let me know…

The title of this page aptly chosen to highlight for what is actually needed for Entrance preparation. It is a small modification of the old proverb ‘ie slow and steady wins the race’. In MDS PG entrance preparation you should be FAST as well as STUDY( STEADY) in your approach in preplanned strategy.

This is written keeping in view different entrances. If we have common entrance we guess that the paper will be in line with AIPG and the strategy changes accordingly

The database analysis is the essence of interviewing many toppers about their viewpoint on the strategies that led them to success.

Dear Aspirants

First of all I would like to thank all the students who supported us for all this 15 years. Infact Iam very much annoyed by the comments made by some bloggers and inexperienced colleagues on the internet on how to prepare for entrances. Our new aspirants are being carried away by the suggestions given by them which is not practical also. One of the friends suggested to read some 50 text books. I can guess he might have never prepared for the entrance or might have not succeeded after many attempts still reading to complete this text books. Dear friends first of all let me make clear what all you see on all these social sites and the discussions being carried is only less than 2% of the total number of candidates appearing for various entrances and the toppers on these sites are less than 0.2% of the total number of successful candidates.

With vast experience and by scientific methodology after interviewing with the many toppers and who have lost despite of reading well.

The group included 100 toppers— 40 made through AIPG, 25 comed, 10 for mahe, 2for AIIMS and 2 for PGI, and rest the toppers for other state entrances. All of them succeeded in recent 3-4 years. Apart from this we have included those who have lost despite of their hard work

By posting this I don’t mean to hurt my co bloggers and authors of various books including mine as I have also faced some critical remarks for my books also.

“Nothing succeeds like success”

After all, successful men are the role models today.

This theme is made for you in association with many aspirants like you. It is meant to make your preparation effective, yet not harder. It is based upon the experience of many toppers who succeeded in various PG entrance examinations. As you know a prerequiste for success in any PG entrance exam is:

“Right type of information at the right time”

First of all we discuss those are preparing for the First time

When to start preparation

First approach is the best approach. Every year some 25000 new aspirants are competing with you. Remember this.

In the changed scenario at least 8 months of preparation is needed to face any entrance confidently

Happily enjoy first 2-4 months during your internship as we are of course human beings . This is the golden period of your life and also the platform where you have to start journey for your rest of life. I strongly suggest you to start for PG immediately after 2 months of internship starting.

Time lost can never be gained. Time and Tide wont stop for any body

As a teachers we have seen Internees wasting their time by reading news papers, novels , some chit chats in the Department. Instead of that utilize this time for reading any MCQ questions papers.

Internship is the turning pointing in the life of a dental surgeon. We strongly suggest you to shed off your inertia and fully utilize this valuable and irrevocable golden time .

Should I join clinics

We suggest you to join in any clinics and not for more than first 3-4 months unless there is any financial problem.

FIRST THINGS TO DO :

► PREPARATION FOR ENTRANCE EXAM IS DIFFERENT FROM PREPARING FOR UG EXAM. SOME OF THE CONCEPTS WHICH YOU READ IN YOUR UG MAY BE DIFFERENT FOR PG. THIS IS BECAUSE MOST OF OUR MCQ WERE PREPARED FROM AMERCIAN NATIONAL BOARDS.

► PROCURE ALL THE STUDY MATERIAL.

► STOP PROCRASTINATING. START TODAY ..OF COURSE NOW ITSELF

► PLAN and ORGANISE YOUR STUDIES AND STUDY IN ADVANCE

► PREPARE THE SCHEDULES FOR EACH SUBJECT AND THE TIME TO BE ALLOTED.TIME MANAGEMENT IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT

► THINK POSITIVELY. MAKE YOUR MIND TENSION FREE.MAKE YOUROBJECTIVES CLEAR AND PRECISE.

► DON’T FEEL SHY OF HARD WORK.

► PRE PLAN & AVOID ACTIVITIES THAT USUALLY CONFRONT ONE DURING EXAM PREPARATION—MAY BE FINANCIAL PROBLEMS, FAMILY PROBLEMS OR ANY OTHER PERSONAL PROBLE. REMEMBER THESE ARE ALL TEMPORARY THINGS.

► DO NOT GET DISTURBED DUE TO LACK OF SELF-CONFIDENCE ON ACCOUNT OF FAILURES OR LOW PERCENTAGE IN EARLIER EXAMS. IT IS THE HARD WORK WITH LOGICAL LEARNING THAT COUNTS IN THE PG ENTRANCE.

► PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE READING MCQS WITH REASONING.

► ONLY ONE EASY OF SUCCEEDING IN THE EXAMINATION IS –HARD WORK.

Preface :

Hi to all the students from your friendly Dr.Deb

Welcome to one more article discussing about MDS Preparation . Internship is a very crucial period in the life of any BDS student.Fresh out of BDS final exams the student is anxious and pumped up to move forward . For obvious reasons preparations for MDS is one of the most thought after option . Internship is no doubt hectic but it is also a very important phase of MDS preparation . If used wisely it gives the student that much needed necessary start which can prove decisive in the rankings .

Even if the student doesn’t get a rank right in the 1st attempt during internship , the preparation in the internship comes very very useful when the student goes for an all out preparation in the year after Internship.

In this article Author ( Dr.Suresh Shenvi) is discussing how he went about preparing for MDS Entrance during his internship .

A warm thanks to Dr.Suresh Shenvi for sharing his experiences that will be helpful to so many students …

PART 1 OF THE ARTICLE

INTERNSHIP & SUCCESS

Hi .

I am Dr.Suresh Shenvi.

Hope you must have read my earlier blogs on the entrance and hope most of them were benefitted from it.

And for the new once , The another one is here.. It was the first blog ever written by me for the entrance which was totally based on my fresh experience just after the end of MDS entrance. Although the later blogs cover all the doubts in detail, this one is the shortest one. So here it goes.

Once you enter the best days of internship, after that hectic long BDS final year, with a dream of doing MDS in mind.. you start looking for the books need to be read? You also start wondering which coaching to join.?? Isn’t it?? . but many students later realize that, such facilities will be available only in metro cities..so the student starts thinking about dropping another year to join the coaching next year so that he or she can give his/her 100%.May be they are not wrong .. But you do have 10 precious month of internship . so why dont you give a complete genuine try when you already have free time.

Now the big question is HOW???

PREPARATION

I can tell you how I had prepared for entrance during my internship . I had a good score during my BDS yrs, but I too was not sure about how to prepare for entrance for MDS???. so I was no different from others.

I had asked some of my immediate seniors who got through various entrances..so apart from reading this long mail , you should also ask your seniors, as they will give u better idea about your state entrance

Its better to follow the things said by Seniors who have got success than trying to find a new path on you own..

10 MONTHS

You have around 10 months from now.

There are two ways.. Either read theory or MCQ explanation.

I will give you formula. Your success can be divided in to
60% what you do in internship
20% what you did in past 4 yrs
10% luck
and remaining 10% can’t be achieved no matter what you read

HOW TO ACHIEVE 60%-

60 PERCENT

Start from the 2nd month of internship, or at least 10 months before exams.

All are at the same position when you start preparation , may be one or two percent ahead of you,, but IT’S THE NOT START,, IT’S THE END WHICH MATTERS THE MOST.

U need to do following books minimum

Dental Pulse-6 times
Gourishankar- 4 times
Neeraj wadhwan-3 times
Jatin kalra-2 times(optional for oral pathology)
Ritu Duggal 2 times(optional specially for ortho)

Prabhakaran for perio
Dental Bytes-2 times
Mudit khanna-3 times

Amit ashish – 2 times
Recent exam papers ( OUR OWN BOOK DENTAL QUEST AND OTHERS like dental explorer )
National Boards

I repeat.. Its the minimum time.. If you start early you can finish the pulse more than the above mentioned times for sure but yes the revisions some different approach so that you can improve the speed. For that do check my other article on Review of MDS entrance books.

Yous need complete this task this before December.. And in January you have only time to do Pulse or Gowrishankar Dentest and just the Dental papers and just question and answer from Mudit khanna …

End of part 1 …
