So Lets Start and Solve the Mystery of What After BDS ?

Before joining dentistry stream  ,we are usually not aware of the difficulties that we are going to face . Most of us do this mistake of thinking that doing BDS ensures a smooth career with smooth and easy returns . By the time we finish our internship this dream breaks and we face the stark and hard reality . Every thing doesn’t look as rosy as we imagined.

For certain persons whose father and mother are already in this field things might be a little easy and different. But such cases are exception and if you are first time dentist in your family without any proper back up things can be a little difficult.

In this post lets go through some of the possibilities that lie ahead …

A ) The list is endless , but always  remember to choose what u r comfortable with.The best course for an indian would be to do the PG courses in a good college and then invest in a nice furnished clinic or better still be a consultant in some clinics. That way u invest in solid returns.Initial setbacks are common. I know of a dentist who had virtually no good practice for years before he clicked and is one of the top endodontic consultant.

Now here’s the catch . Getting a govt MDS seat is not easy. It not only needs a great deal of hard work , sometimes two to three attempts to get through and there is always the risk of not getting through even after a lot of dedicated preparation.

But one got to take the chance. There is this second way to get into private colleges spending some bulk some of money . But some times it works out as people who can afford to pay get the degree faster and easier than others.

B) ACADEMIC LECTURE : 

The most common idea that any body has is to  to land in academic field as a lecturer …….if u r comfortable in teaching fields.

If u r undergraduate please dont expect high salaries!use it as a platform to learn and prepare for ur PG. Use the help of the aspirants and senior people! If u complete ur post graduation that is a sure shot since u can get sure salary every month irrespective of ur practice..and in a decade or so u can land as an asst. professor or professor and HOD in some college!

But here’s also there is a catch . There has been a steady increase in the number of PG in the recent past and the chances of getting a permanent opening in the college is getting slimmer and tighter.

C) GOVERNMENT SERVICE : 

Govt. service is another option.In Tamil nadu,TNPSC exams are conducted with few years gap.so know what it is like in ur place.that way its good even if u can squeeze in just after ur UG.cuz u can do ur PG as a service candidate later …..so get the details..

D) GOING ABROAD : 

Its not about financial burden.

Its about wise investment, I mean it.

I would suggest that ypu dont put plans on US as of now for two reasons.The tests will be of difficult nature and u need to accustom urself to the practices there….like the drugs and legal issues!

And the cost u need to incur to attempt once the exam may be huge and its not wise unless we plan to settle there or you already have a solid back up like some relative  and even then we cannot afford the loss if we fail.Test fees are huge by indian standards and just to attempt it you need lots of investment.

But of course if one does make it finally abroad as a good dentist then you can be one of the few ultra successful dentists, as unlike India , dentistry abroad is one of the most highest paid jobs . But in the end its you who have to decide and weigh the advantages v/s disadvantages of  trying to settle in abroad , as the personal situation varies from one individual to other .

Yes the most common option that emerges out is MDS . But as we all know , its not so easy as it seems . Getting a  Govt. seat is tough as it needs lot of hard work and seats are few . So there is no guarantee that you will definitely get a seat . Option of private colleges in not feasible for everyone as its a costly affair .

I’m writing this article solely to help/guide you guys  i.e. Dental Professionals/colleagues ,  out there who wants to get into the wonderful organization called ARMY DENTAL CORPS, a very vital part of INDIAN ARMY.

It’s a beautiful organization to start with and a fantastic career option for a fresh dental graduate/post graduate while looking onto the current state of dental jobs available and otherwise also in terms of patient exposure, challenging cases in challenging conditions, job satisfaction, financial aspects and etc,etc….

It is the only organization in India right now to provide so many dental jobs in a govt’ sector to dental graduates both UG and PG

How to Get Entry?

It can be through two modes:

(i) SSC(short service commission) or a,

(ii) DPC( Direct Permanent commission).

But due to some reason commissioning are going on for SSC only these days. Of which the procedure is as follows:

Usually it all starts with an advertisement in leading newspapers and electronic media i.e. www.indianarmy.nic.in  stating the number of vacancies, format of application, dead lines, phone numbers for enquiry and other relevant information. Mostly in the month of sep-oct each year.

The candidates should read all eligibility crieteria’s carefully before applying and apply in the given format only with all necessary documents neatly attached in a orderwise fashion and make sure it reaches the HQ before due date.

Then wait patiently to get the acknowledgement card due to lot many applications it might take sometime after the due date of applications.

You will get the acknowledgment card signifying that your application has been reached the concerned office and has not to do anything with the interview call.

Then if your name gets shortlisted for the interview ( only for BDS , MDS will surely get a call as per current scenario) you will get a interview letter along with a intimation call, since last year the list has also been displayed on the website i.e. www.indianarmy.nic.in along with the day you’ve been assigned for the interview.

And then be prepared for the interview and on the day please be well dressed in formals (preferably), shoes well polished, tie for gentlemen’s and don’t commit any blunders, show offs like wearing a Indian flag on tie and so on(people do sometimes)

For the interview part, be thorough with the academics part anything to everything can be asked from dentistry and its latest advancements plus they will also judge you on the basis of your personality, the way you talk, the way you dress and so on, some questions can be asked to judge your aptitude also.

Itl be a panel of 8-9 High flying officer ‘s from different specialties, stalwarts in there fields, sitting on a round table, i know this all sounds too much but please be patient and calm during the interview, they are there to select you and judge you and your potential, so remain confident, polite and answer questions wisely take your time don’t just utter anything

Enter the room by asking permission, greet everyone, sit when asked, be to the point in answering, don’t bluff around if you don’t know just say it politely that you don’t ( no one knows everything), speak only the truth while asked don’t make up thing they are smart enough to catch, don’t commit things like i’m here to serve the nation and all, be what you are, then after the interview is over leave when they told you to leave & leave the room while greeting once again.

Like you must have heard “An Officer – A Gentleman”

Then you have to wait till the evening announcement of results, if your name is there then you will be given a form to be filled along with the information about the center/venue for your medical examination which is always on the next following day of interview. Till this point its provisional merit list.

For the medical examination, reach the medical facility on time, empty stomach, then you will be subjected a a complete thorough medical checkup from all medical specialties and in the evening the results will be declared.

Then on the basis of your interview and medical examination, etc the final merit list will be made and the selected candidates based on the number of vacancies will be called for commissioning along with all the information for joining.

And from here the “new life begins with the uniform.”

You will be granted a rank of Capt. in Indian army with all the facilities and perks of an officer along with ALL THE RESPONSIBILITIES and COMMITMENTS involved for the organization.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

• Commission is granted in the rank of Lieutenant.
• Pay and Allowances and privileges will be same as regular Army Officers when embodied for training and military service.
• Promotions upto Lt Col by time scale subject to fulfilling laid down criteria. Promotion to Colonel and Brigadier by selection.
• Officers commissioned in TA Infantry may be called out for military service for longer duration depending on requirement.

• One month basic training in the first year of commission.
• Two months annual training camp every year including the first year.

Civilian Candidates :

Candidates whose applications forms are found correct after scrutinisation will be called for screening by a Preliminary Interview Board (PIB), at their respective TA Group Headquarters.

Candidates selected by PIB should provide brief BIO-DATA to include details about their employment with monthly income from all sources at the time of documentation immediately after PIB. Successful candidates will undergo further screening by Service Selection Board (SSB) and Medical Board for final selection.

• Ex Service Officers of three services as a candidate should send their application alongwith enclosures as mentioned in application form to

Addl Directorate General TA, Integrated HQ of MoD (Army), ‘L’ Block, New Delhi-01.

Disclaimer : This particular post is a self recounting of a MDS aspirant who  cleared  the exam. This letter is a point of experience . The aim is to clear certain doubts of students and motivate them .

From PMT to PG, a little boy transforms, from a novice, who runs to mom and daddy for every worry of his; to a person, to whom people run for their worries!

It’s a big story. If tried to tell in short, then we will have to start from the internship period. Because before internship there is nothing that big we are exposed to. Till then our lives are up to canteen and classes only. Once internship strikes, you come to know that what you are going to face next. You are going to be on your own, going to be the most treasured graduate in this country!

“Power brings responsibility along with it” used to tell the uncle of Spiderman! Same happens in internship. We are working like a doctor for the first time, getting handsome stipend; on our own, to an extent. After the on call duties in wards, you return in the room and think “Ok! Now what next? Where do I want to see myself some five or ten years from now?”

I used to idolize my teachers; I wanted to be like them. Like the best one among them! For that, here came a need of post graduation. May be you are thinking that I was bit late in thinking about it, but it’s a story of average people in the undergrad amongst whom I found myself.

There come MCQ books, along with long forgotten anatomy and microbiology too. But… how to start? What to read and what not? My few weeks went in thinking and planning new ways to study until I realized that “Oh boy! You need help!” Go to those successful, those preparing, seniors. Among them many were those with whom I didn’t have a good rapport or had a sour relationship. Somewhat hesitant, I thought not to approach them, but the big question of life was meandering in front of me “a PG seat!”

I swallowed my false self pride in front of seniors and approached them and my goodness! They were so kind in forgetting all bad blood and being eager in helping their loving junior of a time! Life taught me a lesson again, like Spiderman’s uncle, that life is too small and we are smaller even; there are few people whom we know in our lives among millions in this world and there was no use in fighting with hand full of human beings we will ever be able to know in this big world in our small life span!

Any way, my preparation started and went on smoothly. I stopped news paper, forgot who the new chart-busting singer is and who married whom. I went through all this for months. At last the prayers of my family, my well-wishers, melted the heart of God! He blessed me with a decent rank in AIPG 2006!

Life changed altogether! People started to take note of me; my dad mom could say that they have sons who can realise their dreams!

But the biggest change came from within, in me! I started to get back my confidence that I was also worth and I could also have a place of my own in this fast-forward world!

During my preparation days, I used to think it this way: that we all graduates were people corked inside a big bottle! And there was one mouth of the bottle to come out and see the world, which was fitted with a cap. All of us plan and prepare to push open that cap of the bottle, all the months until first Sunday of January comes! On that fateful day we all jump leaps and bounds, we push open the cap!! But there are so many people locked inside the bottle that not all can escape the imprisonment in that bottle….. Some escape, being blessed, some have to toil again. More than that they have to wait for full one more year…

With all its teachings through the years, life teaches us how to wait for that great Sunday of January and how to jump so precisely to uncap that bottle and end up with freedom! To lead the next part of it – Life!

In a larger hospital, assistants and managers may be appointed to handle various business and support functions, but the hospital administrator will still oversee their work.

Managing Patient Records A large part of the hospital administrator’s job concerns managing patient records. The administrator must make sure that medical histories, current health information, and billing, insurance and legal documents are all being handled appropriately. Keeping all of this information organized and up to date is an essential role that a hospital administrator must fill.

Business Aspects

• Hospitals are now run like small- or medium-sized businesses and involve all conventional business operations, practices and procedures. A hospital administrator has to manage the business side of the hospital to ensure smooth running of the hospital on all fronts.

  The business aspects encompass management of human resources and personnel, establishing policies and procedures, maintaining of computer systems and databases, allocation of budgets, tracking accounts and finance, and other organizational systems. He or she coordinates with professionals, staff members and other employees and assigns their duties and tasks.

Address Doctors’ Needs

• A hospital administrator has to interact, engage and coordinate with doctors, physicians, surgeons, nurses, health care technicians, other medical staff members and health care professionals involved with the primary care, treatment and rehabilitation of patients.

  A hospital administrator has to draw up schedules for resident doctors and allied medical staff, address their specific needs and ensure that they are able to perform their primary duties of looking after patients, professionally and ethically. A hospital administrator also coordinates with external specialists and consultants in case of emergencies and specialized operations.

   

   

Patients’ Medical Care and Well-Being

• The care and treatment of patients in the hospital is a major responsibility of the hospital administrator. He or she has to ensure the availability and deliverability of quality facilities and amenities for all patients. The administrator has to motivate the medical teams and allied staff members to perform their roles, tasks and functions to the best of their abilities to make the patients feel comfortable at all times. He or she takes rounds of all rooms and centers where patients are housed or recuperating and, if necessary, makes quick, informed decisions to alleviate or improve patient care.

Dealing with External Vendors

• A hospital administrator has to liaise with vendors, contractors, insurance firms, suppliers and other partners on a regular basis. Keeping the hospital stocked with drugs, medicines, food items, hospital equipment, systems, allied hospital gadgets and machinery is a priority item.This is a critical responsibility so as to ensure that the primary and tertiary care of patients and the specialized needs of doctors and surgeons are not compromised. The administrator has to have sound negotiation skills to draw up the right contracts, follow-up on orders and maximize purchasing power with vendors and suppliers.

Overseer

• Hospital administrators must oversee daily hospital operations by supervising other managers and managing budgets and financial operations.

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION 

All graduates from any stream are eligible for this course . BDS graduates are also Eligible for it . Its still an untapped area of jobs & many BDS & MBBS graduates are gradually trying for it .

This is a specialized courses and all those interested in working in the fast emerging sector can pursue a course in healthcare management. However, it varies from institution to institution. Some institutions offer course only to doctors while others to graduates in science and some others are open to students from all streams.

Basic Course of Study 

• Prior job experience in health care administration is preferred by many employers. New graduates with master’s degrees in health care administration may start out as supervisors or department managers. Other on-the-job experience opportunities include fellowships and residences. Health care administrators with bachelor’s degrees can gain hospital administration experience as administrative assistants at large hospitals.

Ability to understand and interpret financial data. Hospital administrators need skills, such as strong leadership and the ability to motivate other employees. In addition, administrators need to be flexible and be able to listen to different opinions and opposing views. Communication skills are vital to being successful in hospital administration. This article is written by Dr.Abhishek Khanna . He is currently based in UK after completing BDS in India . He is currently Pursuing Masters in Public Health Dentistry in UK & Preparing to appear for UK qualifying exams to practice as Dentist . In this article he is explaining all the steps he knows on how to  migrate to UK after BDS and settle as a dentist . A great deal of thanks to Dr.Abhishek for sharing his experiences .

As I said, the exam is conducted in UK, so there are 2 possible ways of appearing in this exam

Under graduate dental students can join any full time masters course by applying online to universities or by meeting their country representatives personally, as most of the universities send their counsellors to take interviews and give admission offer. You can get information about interview from British council, New Delhi or from consultants dealing with abroad studies. Best source is British council as most of the consultants are not trustworthy.

After interview, if they select then you will get a conditional offer letter first which have some conditions like score of 6.5 bands in IELTS and payment of 50% fees or depends if university demands for some other things too. After fulfilling their conditions, you have to contact them back and then they will give an unconditional offer letter or CAS letter by which you can apply for tier 4 student visa.

Most of the universities start the course from September and few from January. So you should start applying atleast 2-3 months before the course starts.

ORE exam

Before applying, you need to make sure you meet the clinical experience and English language requirement.

English Language Test

Minimum overall 7 bands in IELTS and not less than 6.5 in each section is required to apply for exam. IELTS is compulsory for all non-English country students. No other English language test is approved by General dental council, UK.

Also you need to check the list of approved universities from website of General Dental Practitioners. Most of the Indian universities are in this list.

ORE Part-1

Cost for ORE part 1 is £600 and exam is held twice in a year (usually in September and April).

It consists of two computer-based exam papers:

* Paper A covers clinically applied dental science and clinically applied human disease

* Paper B covers aspects of clinical dentistry, including law and ethics and health and safety

Each paper is made up of Multiple Short Answer questions (Extended Matching Questions and Single Best Answer Questions). You must pass both papers in order to progress to Part 2. You will be allowed four attempts for Part 1.

 ORE Part-2

Cost for ORE part 2 is £2250 and is held in every 2-3 months.

In that case, you can apply when next date is announced. You can apply within next 2 years of completing part 1 exam. You will be allowed four attempts for part 2.

This exam is based on your practical knowledge and you need to perform some patient based procedures. It consists of 4 components .

The NDEB web-based self-assessment has been developed as a tool to help you gauge your ability to successfully complete the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge.

The web-based self-assessment consists of 100 multiple choice questions. Upon completion, a tally of your responses (correct, incorrect, and unanswered) will be provided, along with some guidelines on how to proceed based on your score. These results are provided as a guideline only, and neither disqualify you from taking the Assessment nor guarantee that you will receive the minimum required test equated score on the Assessment.

Graduates of non-accredited dental programs can also successfully complete an accredited Qualifying/Degree Completion Program in order to become eligible to participate in the NDEB Written and OSCE Examinations. These programs are especially designed to orient international graduates to dentistry and dental practice in Canada. 

You must contact the universities directly to obtain specific information regarding these programs and admissions procedures. Contact information can be found below.

The result of one or more of the Assessments in the NDEB Equivalency Process are requirements for application to a Qualifying Program or a Degree Completion Program. Each university will inform you of its admission policy including which Assessments are admission requirements.

 

The application fee for the NDEB Equivalency Process is $600.00, non-refundable.
NOTES

• Application to the Equivalency Process and Registration for Assessments must be submitted online. Only credit card payments will be accepted.

 

• Upon verification, individuals who have previously participated in the l’Ordre des dentistes du Québec (ODQ) equivalency process, the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry (ACFD) Eligibility Examination or the NDEB certification process for non-accredited graduates will receive a credit for the application fee.

 

• Due to a high volume of documents received by our office we are unable to provide oral updates on documentation. The status of your documents can be obtained by logging into your online application and selecting the Profile Tab. Documents that have been ‘received’ will take approximately 6-8 weeks to be reviewed.

STEP . 3 . Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge

EVALUATION OF BASICS )

The Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge is a multiple choice style assessment. It consists of two (2) books, each with 150 multiple-choice type questions. Each book is given in a three (3) hour session. The sessions are held in the morning and afternoon of one day.

Participants whose score on the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge is a test equated 75 or higher may register for the Assessment of Clinical Skills and the Assessment of Clinical Judgement.*

 

A participant has the privilege of taking the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge three (3) times.
